Sound expo

My project was supposed to be a tribute to all the classic thrasher movies that I used to watch as a kid such as "Friday the 13th" and "Halloween". In those movies there always seemed to be a scene or two that had to do with one person walking alone in either a hallway or on a path in the forest in which they heard footsteps and whispers coming in all directions around them. I decided to play off this Idea by putting two audio devices both of which played off of mp3 players. In my project The first audio device that you come upon is the one playing footsteps. and the second is the one where there are whispers. If I were able to do this project again there is a few things that I would have done differently. The first one is that I would have recorded the noises much louder than I did. I think that it was difficult for some people to hear anything at all. But that was not the case for everybody because I had multiple people tell me that what they felt was unnerving when they walked on the path that i had set up. The second thing that I would have fixed is that In the project I set up delays so that you would not hear a constant loop of the two together but rather a offset mixture of the two. Unfortunately the effect that actually happened was that there were some people that walked through that did not hear a thing because they walked through right at the right speed where the pauses were playing. So they did not hear a thing. Over all I think that the project was a success in the fact that it opened my eyes to the possibilities of sound art, which is an area that I had not looked into much prior to the assignment.

For this video project I decided to think a little bit differently than I usually do. Usually when given parameters that we must fallow I try to stretch the meaning and make my own meaning and then go from there. This time around I decided to think completely concrete. When We were told that we had to be able to incorporate a loop I tried to think as literally as I possibly could so in my video which I entitled take a walk. The characters are literally walking in a loop. I then thought about who I wanted my characters to be and what I wanted them to represent. I originally wanted the two walkers to be one male and one female. But scheduling between friends became problematic so in the end I went with two males (one being myself) both being around the same age. In the editing of the video I deleted the sound and replaced it with the sound of walking through leaves. This was because I wanted the viewer of the piece to have to put together a story about the relationship between the two. They could be friends or brothers or co-workers, by eliminating what the conversation was about the viewer had to read the interaction between the two using only body language. I chose the idea of two people walking because it is something that I do all the time. If there is something that is troubling me I usually go for a walk either by myself or with a friend in both cases the idea of only having to think about the simplest of motor functions allows you to calm down and focus on the problem at hand and how to solve it. If I were to do this video over there is a few things that I would change. The first thing that I would do would be to eliminate sound from the piece all together. when using a sound track that has nothing to do with what is going on in the scene it makes it obvious to the user that the sound has been replaced and edited. (and this was not my intent) I would also go with my original idea of having a boy and a girl instead of two male actors. And last I would zoom the camera out so that the the feet of the actors can be viewed at all times. This helps to show how close the two are walking together and how fast they are walking, which can give clues into how friendly they are and if they are walking for the sake of walking or if they are walking to get somewhere. I was not sure how this project was going to turn out but I can not say that i am disappointed I only wish that I was better at using a camera and directing people to act out what is in my head. (for this is my biggest problem). But over all I enjoyed the project and I am thinking about redoing it for my portfolio and or upcoming art shows.

Honestly I do not really know what the passage was trying to say. It was a little all over the place. I think that it was just trying to outline the use for video. There is a lot more that goes into making a video than there is in making a drawing or a painting. The article was so over the place that even richard sierra was mentioned in the passage. he is one of my favorite sculptors.
